You play the game as John Marshall – a young man who grew up on a farm. As he wakes from a mid-afternoon nap, he finds that his world has been turned upside down. So, he grabs his trusty pitchfork and goes outside to explore!

The opening level – The Farm – will take you through the tutorial, but in case you need help . . .

Stab – Use your pitchfork to take down enemies and to destroy any breakable items. Press the Spacebar or the “A” button on your controller.

Interact – John can interact with many items throughout the game – and he usually finds some smart-ass remark – so be sure to use interact often. This is also how you speak to NPCs. Press “X” on the keyboard or the “X” button on your controller.

Use Health Item – You will need to do this often! Press “H” on the keyboard or the “B”  button on your controller.

Change Health Item – As John acquires more health items, he’ll need to switch back and forth. Press “Y” on the keyboard or the “Y” button on the controller to change health items.

Shotgun – John will get his father’s trusty shotgun at some point – press the right “CTRL” button on the keyboard or the Right Trigger on your controller to shoot. Be careful – reloading takes some time!

Change ammo – Press the right “SHIFT” button or the Right Bumper on the controller to change ammo.

Use ability – Once John obtains the Glove, press the left “CTRL” button or left trigger on your controller to use an ability.

Change ability – Left “SHIFT” or the left bumper will change abilities. Watch the recharge time – some abilities take longer before you can use them again!

Access Journal – In John’s journal, you will find just about everything that you need to know (including all of the controller commands). Press “ESC” or the “START” button on the controller to pause the game and access the journal.

Map – The map will add to and complete itself as John visits each area in the game. Press “M” on the keyboard or the “BACK” button on the control to access the map. Remember that you can also press “INTERACT” to get a close-up/local map to show!

Weapons

Basic Pitchfork

This is your starting weapon. It does minimal damage.

Shotgun

Along the way, you will receive your father’s shotgun. Ammo can be hard to come by . . . so use it wisely!

Slugshot

Single-shot ammo.  Long range and powerful, good for taking down single enemies.

Steel Pitchfork

An upgraded fork!

How to find: You will need the Steel Ingot - found in the hardware store in Zelinsberg. Speak to Silas when you return to Chapel and he will complete the upgrade.

Kartok Pitchfork

The ultimate in pitchforking technology!

How to find: You will need the Sindrium – which is found in Jacob’s room. Pick it up and return to Silas.

Kartok Glove

Found at the Research Facility – it’s a mystery why John can use it, but it’s extremely powerful. The more energy an ability uses – the longer the recharge time.

Buckshot

Multi-shot spread ammo.  Shorter range, good for crowd control.

Items
Items

Currency

Seed

These are valuable and can be used to trade with Silas while John visits Chapel. There is a limit to how many seeds he can carry, but Health Upgrades will increase this limit.

Health

You begin the game with 5 units of health. Throughout the course of the campaign, you have the opportunity to find 5 health upgrades. Health items drop often, so don’t be afraid to use them often – you will need it!

Power Bolt

Hits multiple enemies in front of John with bolts of energy.  Seems to only use a small amount of energy.

Shield

Creates a force shield around John for a short time that blocks some damage.  Uses a bit more energy than the Power Bolt.

Freeze

Shoots an icy projectile that explodes on impact, freezing everyone around for a few seconds.  Uses a medium amount of energy.

Nova

Fires a ball of focused energy that explodes, staggering and dealing massive damage to all enemies in the area.  Seems to use all the energy at once.

Keys

Key

These will get you through locked doors.  Hopefully, you knew that.

Kartok Key

Some of the Kartok doors will also require keys.

Corn

Adds one unit back to John’s health.

Meat

Adds two units back to John’s health.

Vial

Completely restores John’s health.

Health Upgrades

Each health upgrade adds a notch to John’s total health, as well as restores his current health to full. In addition, John is able to carry more seeds, health items, and ammo!

Puzzles
Puzzles

“Lost Woods” Puzzle

This puzzle is located far west, underground, on the Outback Point level. As he enters a door, John reads the following sign:

“There once was a boy from a faraway land, who went on a quest to save a beautiful princess...for the first time.  That is...until he got lost in the woods.”

Need more? From the original game – “Go north, west, south, west!”

“Waterfall” Puzzle

Located on Woodland Falls, this is less a puzzle, more a hidden location. Find the southern waterfall, head to its east side – you should be able to walk on water a bit and then head through the waterfall!

“Organ” Puzzle

John took a few piano lessons as a kid – he needs to play the correct chord progression (4 chords in the right order) in order to complete it. The organ lights up as the correct chord is played . . . there is a hint.  Interact with the holy water stand in the back of the church to find this:

“Little Johnny walked up to the organ, and sat right down.  When he left, he got a prize.”

Still stuck?  Up, right, down, left . . .

“Glyph” Puzzle #1

Lcoated in the eastern underground location in the Path to the Hunter’s Cabin, you should first visit the underground section in the southwest. There, you will find Murphy, along with the exact order of the glyphs.

Need more? Uh . . . worm, eagle, lips, owl

“Switch” Puzzle

In the underground section of Road to Zelinsberg, there are three darker switches that are on timers. Pull each before the time runs out, and you’ll get a secret item. It can be done . . .

“Glyph” Puzzle #2

Miss this one and you have a long walk from your last save point to get back here! The answer appears at the back of Jacob’s room on Mount Hope.

Forget the order? It’s . . . owl, eagle, lips, hand, eagle – probably not an eagle and probably not lips, but it looks like them, right?
